SVENSKA CARROMFÖRBUNDET, SWEDEN

a new star on European Sk

Svenska Carromförbundet is a new Carrom federation, but quite active and getting more and more popularity in the country. It is led by one of the brilliant Carrom players Mehedi Hassn and will

be taking part with 4 players in the 16th Carrom Euro Cup 2012 at Darmstadt, Germany from 14th to 18th June 2012.

As Mehedi Hassan informed us there have been attempts to form a Swedish Carrom Federation since 1990.

Mehedi Hassan himself tried in 2008 and 2009 to popularize Carrom in Sweden. In 2008 an exhibition of Carrom was organized at the Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm on 2nd November.

Inspired from this success he started a small Carrom club "Stockhlm Carrom Club" and conducted an introductory meeting on 29th Oct. 2011 and practicing on every Saturday since 5th November 2011.

Early 2012 the club has been converted into Carrom Federation of Sweden (SVENSKA CARROMFÖRBUNDET).

At present this federation has two Carrom Clubs and hopes to expand it further very soon.

Top Carrom players of the world happy in Europe

Berlin, 27th September 2011

The Indian Naional Carrom Team concluded it European Tour today, which is being appreciated as a
great event for further promotion of the game of Carrom in Europe. The tour started on 16th September 2011 from Berlin, Germany.

With current World Champion Yogesh pardeshi, current Asian Champion Prakash Gaikwad the Indian team gave excellent performances in Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Switzerland and won the hearts of many local players.
The team was invited by the European Carrom Confederation to visit several European countries. The visa for third Indian player K. Srinivas was refused by the German Embassy in New Delhi. Although the German Carrom Federation (Deutscher Carrom Verband e.V.) and the Carrom Sports Association Berlin (Carrom Sport Verein Berlin e.V.) had officially invited the Indian National Team. Also the Swiss Carrom Association, Carrom Federation of poland, Carrom Association of Czech Republic and UK Carrom Federation had extended similar official invitations stating that they will be responssible for boarding, lodging and local transport of the Indian team. Mr. S.K. Sharma General Secretary of the All India Carrom Federation, who is also Secretary General of the International Carrom Federation was also resfused visa by the German Embassy in New Delhi, but finally joined the Indian team in Zurich on Swiss visa.

On 26th September, Mr. Sharma sent me the following mail:

"Yesterday, two Indian players played Test Match with Swiss Team.  The format was different. Two Indian players played Test Match against four Swiss players each and each.  All the eight matches were played on the basis of Laws of Carrom except that each game was restricted to 8 boards.

Both Yogesh and Prakash won four matches each i.e. the score was 8-0.

Besides, on 24th September 2011, Indian players gave exposure to Swiss players by playing one game matches against about 12 players.

Hospitality provided by Swiss Carrom Association was excellent and we are happy, satisfied and appreciate their support. They also arranged three hours sight seeing tour to Rhein falls and two hours guided city tour of Zurich. We are still in Zurich and going to Berne to meet the Counsellor of the Embassy.  We are leaving for Delhi at 4 pm on 27.9.11 i.e. tomorrow."

Earlier on 16th September the Indian team had visited Berlin on the invitation of the German Carrom Federation and Carrom Sports Association Berlin and played friendly and official test matches between 17th and 18th September. In the official test matches on 18th September which were conducted in two rounds of best of three each, the German players gave initially good resistance, before the Indians could dominate fully.
In Round one Germany's Peter Boecker beat India's Prakash Gaikwad by 25:20, but lost in the second and third games clearly. Praksh Gaikwad won with 25:02 and in second and  25:01 in the third game of the first round. Peter was beaten clearly in the second round by Yogesh Pardeshi with the score 25:01 and 25:03.

Many players from different parts of Poland had come to see and play with Indians. Many friendly matches were held with large number of Polsih players, who included many young enthusiastic boys and girls. The Indian players were extremely delighted on the shower of friendship and excellent hospitality. They were also surprised to see the rising standard of the game in Polansd. At the closing evening on 20th September President of Polish Carrom Federation Jakub Nowakowski and Vice President of ECC Paulina Nowakowska appreciated the excellent performances of the Indian players and presented gifts.

From Warsaw the Indian players along with ECC President went to Prague and played friendly games with Czech players. Like Warsaw the audience in Prague also belonged mostly to enthusiastic young boys and girls and the venue was full. A unique Tournament in Cannes

Report by

Elisa Martinelli

On Friday13th Feb 3 tournaments were held for each category: Women, Under 18 and Outsiders Men. The winner from each of these tournaments would qualify for quarter finals in the World Carrom Tour. This time only few players could be invited at short notice but the organizers told me they hoped that in future editions they would  be able to extend invitations to just a few more of the top players.
All players for the pre selection participated at their own expenses. This hopefully also may change in the future if sponsors can be found. For the invited players Carrom Production took charge of the hospitality.
There were 7 men for the Outsider's event:  Miah Shaheen, Nazrul Islam, Mouraly Venou, Lorenzo Hurlimann, Paolo Martinelli, Jerome and Jonatham Leau. All players played against each other. Mouraly Venou of France was the winner with 5 victories.
For Women's event there were 4 players: Emilie Neuhauser , Florence Roumegous, Elisa Zucchiatti and Silvy Dumas. Elisa was the winner with 3 victories.
In the Under 18 category there were 4 players all from France: Rajou Mouraly, Tom Colomby, Kevin Sieger and Vincent Carcagno. Rajou was the winner.
These tournaments took place during the International Festival de Jeux in the Carrom Art stand and many members of the public were able to watch and also practice on carrom boards nearby. The winners of each tournament were interviewed briefly.
The following 8 players therefore took part in the WCT: Karnal Abdin (UK) Head of series, Pierre Dubois (France ) Head of series, Carlito Bollin (Switzerland) Peter Bocker (Germany), Gianluca Cristiani (Italy) Mouraly Venou (France), Elisa Zucchiatti (Italy) and Rajou Venou (France). On Saturday 14th February the WCT Quarter finals took place. A draw was held and the following matches were played and filmed one at a time. Claudio Motta was chief referee and Stefano Fabiano 2nd referee. The matches were played on basis of best of 3 games, 25 points or 8 boards, no time limit.
Matches and results:
1st session Pierre vs Elisa 25-0, 25-0
2nd session Mouraly vs Rajou 25-4 , 19-17
3rd session Peter vs Carlito   25-4, 25-2
4th session Karnal vs Gianluca 25-2, 25-0
The semi finals and final were played on Sunday 15th February
1st semi final: Pierre vs Mouraly 25-10, 25,2
Pierre scored a black slam in the 1st board of the 2nd game
2nd semi final Karnal vs Peter 22-8, 18-10
The small final was played in the Carrom Art stand and was not filmed but many people were able to watch
Peter vs Mouraly 25-13, 18-10
Final Pierre vs Karnal 11-10, 22,21
The final between Karnal and Pierre was very exciting. In game 1 board 7 Karnal was leading 11-5 and Pierre only just missed a victory the game ending 11-10. In the second game once more Pierre seemed close to winning leading 21-17 on the 7th board but lost in the 8th board by 22-21. The final, like all the other games was played in one of the auditoriums of the Palais des Festivals and was filmed with top equipment and professional crew. 4 cameras were used to capture every moment in HD and flat screens were supplied for the public. All in all it was a very serious and well organized effort and I feel sure the results will be excellent on TV. A small prize giving ceremony was held and trophies given to Karnal, Pierre and Peter as well as bronze medals for other participants. All players were interviewed.
I sincerely hope that all the effort put in this production will prove worthwhile and allow this venture to continue in the future. I wish to thank all the organizers for their splendid work and I feel confident that this will be of great use in promoting carrom world wide. All the players and other participants also contributed greatly to the friendly and fun atmosphere and especially the sense of optimism which in these hard times is a very welcome breath of fresh air not only in the carrom community!
Don't forget to take note of broadcasting times and tell as many people as possible.
